This book is an academic monograph of modern mechanics that is written by mathematics method and gene principle as in life science. It will be published along with another one titled “Calculations of Strengths and Lifetime Prediction on Fatigue-Fracture of Materials and Structures”, which would be related, the calculated results of them are equivalent under the same condition, although both are on different subjects. Readers will be able to compare the consistency between the both.

The author establishes a link among the fatigue-damage-fracture in modem mechanics, the traditional material mechanics and the materials discipline; thereby to depict a comprehensive figure of material behaviors, and to provide many mathematical models, which are correspond each other to in that figure, to make damage mechanics become computable one, only some common parameters and the material constants have to be used.

The book presents a lot of formulas, such as the threshold value of damage, the transition value between two stages, the driving force of fatigue damage, the growth rate and the life prediction of damage, and gives clearly physical and geometrical meaning for some main parameters. In addition, the book offers a lot of curves corresponding to those equations that are from microscopic, mesoscopic to macroscopic damages stage until the whole process, which are respectively under the low cycle fatigue, the high cycle, the very high cycle and the multi axial fatigue conditions, and yet provides related computing methods, relevant tables and data. At the end of each chapter and section there are calculating examples for engineering applications. At the end of the book, readers will find a comprehensive figure of material behaviors and some forms, thereby can obtain a whole concept and knowledge after reading. So it may be a calculating route of safety designs and accident analysis for engineering structures that will be of practical significance for aviation, transportation, petrochemical and other mechanical industries.

This monograph is addressed to researchers, teachers, students and engineering technicians who study or work in fatigue-damage-fracture fields of materials and structures.
